Hope

May 26, 2011 - 12:59pm.

How does someone have hope against all hope? How can one look at every earthly sign, every strip of evidence that tells you this just is not going to happen and yet hold out hope? Abraham believed God despite the evidence around him.

Romans 4:18-21

18 Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, "So shall your offspring be." 19 Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead-since he was about a hundred years old-and that Sarah's womb was also dead. 20 Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, 21 being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised.

Every earthly sign told Abraham that despite God's promise that he would have offspring as numerous as the stars in heaven it just was not possible. He was broaching 100 years old, Sarah's womb was dead, yet Abraham believed the promise of God.

Now fast forward with me to the life and death of Jesus Christ. Despite Jesus' promise to his disciples on several occasions that he would be killed but on the 3 day he would be raised from the dead. Every earthly sign told them that their Savior was dead and he was not coming back. Yet Jesus, just like his Father kept his promise.

Do you believe in the promises of God? Do you believe that God keeps His promises?

Hebrews 11:1 defines faith this way:

1 Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.

Abraham was fully persuaded that God had the power to do what He had promised even though it made no earthly sense. Jesus kept his promise and overcame death on the third day, even though it made no earthly sense.

If we only trust in what we can see and touch we leave no room for faith. History shows us that the God of the universe keeps His promises.

May today be the day that you step out in faith and trust in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior.
